Time Magazine announced today that their choice for person of the year was “The Silence Breakers.” Who are the silence breakers? The multiple women who have recently come forward to tell their stories of sexual harassment and sexual assault.
Edward Felsenthal, Time’s editor in chief said “this is the fastest moving social change we’ve seen in decades, and it began by individual acts of courage by women, and some men too, who came forward.”
The #metoo “movement” is definitely a story that has dominated the last 3/4 of the year. As woman after woman has come forward to say there was some sort of sexual harassment or sexual assault in the workplace. Usually by a boss or a person in position of authority. Women weren’t the only ones to come forward with allegations of sexual assault and abuse by people in positions of authority. There were men who have made claims against some powerful industry people. The kind of powerful people who can probably make it hard for a person to ever work in an industry again. Something that can have an immediate negative impact on a person’s livelihood.
Earlier this month, Donald Trump Tweeted that he had been asked to be Time’s person of the year, but he declined. A claim that Time Magazine quickly denied.
