Jahlil Okafor averaged 17.5 points per game to go along with 7 rebounds per as a rookie. Okafor was looking like a key piece in the rebuild of the 76ers. Somewhere along “The Process” Okafor got frozen out for some reason. Okafor only appeared in two games with the 76ers this season. Okafor clearly wanted out of Philly. Today he got his wish. The 21 year-old big man is headed to Brooklyn to play for the Nets. The deal sends Okafor and guard Nick Stauskas to the Nets. The Nets also get a Philly 2019 second round pick. The 76ers get veteran power forward Trevor Booker in return. The 76ers never really found a way to fit Okafor into the system to go along with their young core of Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. It was the same reason 76ers former big man Nerlens Noel got shipped out to Dallas.
Okafor publicly asked to be traded or brought out on November 1st, after the 76ers declined his $6.3 million team option. Okafor wanting out of Philadelphia started a “free Jah” movement that got backing from a few Golden State Warriors players among others. Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Kevin Durant posed with Okafor’s father as he wore a “free Jah” t-shirt.
