Olympic gold medal winning gymnast, Simone Biles (20), has stepped forward to make claims that former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar sexually abused her when she was as young as 16-years old. Nassar is accused of sexually abusing more than 140 girls on the USA Gymnastics team during his term as official team doctor. Biles is the latest in a long list of female gymnast that include Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and Mckayla Maroney to make the claims. Many of the girls said they were pressured into silence by USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body in the United States.
CNN (@cnn) reports, in response to Biles statement, the organization pledged “unwavering support” for Biles and others who have “courageously” come forward.
“USA Gymnastics is absolutely heartbroken, sorry and angry that Simone Biles or any of our athletes have been harmed by the horrific acts of Larry Nassar. We are our athletes advocates. USA Gymnastics will continue to listen to our athletes and our members in our efforts of creating a culture of empowerment with a relentless focus on athlete safety every single day.”
The hypocritical statement by USA Gymnastics makes you wonder, where was all of this vigorous support when you were telling these 140+ girls to keep silent about being sexually abused by your team doctor? This statement will not save face. If USA Gymnastics knew all of these girls were being sexually abused by the team doctor, and did nothing to help these girls during the time they were being abused, then USA Gymnastics is actually an accomplice to Larry Nassar. There is no separation between what Nassar did and the USA Gymnastics if they knew, and were paying these girls off to keep silent about the abuse. A sincere letter will not change the fact that USA Gymnastics was complicit in this crime.(If the part about them trying to silence the athletes proves to be true.)
