A powerful earthquake hit Taiwan a short time before midnight on Tuesday, causing buildings to collapse and people to cower in search of safety.




The New York Times (@nytimes) reports, The 6.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 11:50 pm and was centered about 14 miles Northeast of Hualien, a city of 110,000 people on Taiwan’s East Coast.




Two people were killed and at least 100 were injured, Taiwan’s state-owned Central News Agency reported.




The Marshal Hotel, where the first and third floors collapsed, 29 people were reportedly struck and at least two are reported missing, Central News Agency reported.
