Today Dick’s Sporting Goods said they would immediately stop selling assault rifles. Dick’s is one of the nations largest sports retailers. The sale of assault-style rifles is surely one of the franchise’s biggest sellers. This is a very admiral move on Dick’s part. Don’t know if it will be profitable, but it’s a very admirable move.
The New York Times (@NYTimes) reports, the retailer said that it would no longer sell high-capacity magazines either. And that it would not sell any gun to anyone under the age of 21-years old. Regardless of the local laws.
The announcement was made two weeks after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 students and staff members. The move by Dick’s is one of the strongest stances taken by corporate America in the national gun debate. It also carries symbolic weight, coming from a national gun seller. Last week, multiple large companies publicly cut ties with the NRA. More are likely to come in the weeks ahead, as the NRA has publicly handled the issue of gun control in one of the worst ways possible. The NRA has publicly placed blame with everyone but themselves, and they’ve publicly pushed back on any type of gun reform whatsoever. Even raising the legal age to own an assault rifle.
Dick’s Chief Executive, Edward Stack (63), whose father founded the company in 1948, made clear that the new policy was a direct response to the Florida shootings.
“When we saw what happened in Parkland, we were so disturbed and upset. We love these kids and their rallying cry, ‘enough is enough.’ It got to us.” Mr. Stack said in an interview.
