Russian police have found a bag containing 54 severed hands near Khabarovosk. A Siberian city. Now the police are trying to find out who those severed hands once belonged to, who cut them off, and why.
Time Magazine (@time) reports, according to The Siberian Times, a single hand was spotted at first, then the bag containing the remains was discovered on an Island in the Amur River. Photos that appear to be taken at the scene showed the hands lined up in 27 matching pairs laid in the snow.
Investigators gave no clues as to who the hands may have belonged to, or why they were discarded. Bandages and hospital-style plastic shoe covers were reportedly found with the hands, and police have taken fingerprints from one of the hands, according to local media.
Theories from local media as to why the hands were severed range from, this being a punishment for stealing, to some sort of medical amputations, or the improperly discarded remains of cadavers dissected by medical students. They left out the always popular theory: Some unlucky people crossed the mafia or did not make their payments on time. Not very likely, but it sounds like it would make for a good movie though.
