Seaside City, California
In news that should come as no surprise to anyone, a teacher with a gun inside of a school, injured a student. The teacher was actually teaching a public safety class when the incident took place.
CNN (@cnn) reports, Seaside City’s Mayor pro tem and reserve officer with the Sandy City Police Department, Dennis Alexander, was teaching a lesson at a Seaside High School in Seaside when he pointed his gun toward the ceiling and accidentally fired it, said Abdul Pridgen, the city’s police chief. A 17-year old student was injured by a bullet fragment or by debris that fell from the ceiling, Pridgen said.
Alexander has been placed on administrative leave from his teaching job according to a spokesperson with the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.
“I think a lot of questions on parents’ minds are, why a teacher would be pointing a loaded firearm at the ceiling in front of students. Clearly, in this incident, protocols were not followed.” Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh told KSBW News. It’s still unclear why the teacher was displaying the firearm in the first place. This one incident goes into the category of a bigger National debate. Should teachers be armed with guns in school?
