DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA
A chemistry teacher at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida (yes, the same Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were killed by an armed man packing an AR-15.) has been arrested after he left his loaded gun in a public restroom, and a drunken homeless man later found and fired the weapon.
CBS News (@cbsnews) reports, 43-year old teacher at Stoneman Douglas High School, Sean Simpson, has been charged with failing to safely store his weapon. A Broward Sheriff’s report says Simpson, who carrie a concealed weapons permit, left his Glock 9mm gun in a restroom at the Deerfield Beach Pier on Sunday. He told deputies he was returning to get it when he heard a gunshot, and found the man holding the weapon.
According to the arrest report, Simpson said he forgot to pick the gun up after he finished using the restroom. According to the Miami Herald, after the shooting that killed 17 people at Stoneman Douglas High School, Simpson stated that he would be willing to carry a gun on campus if it were allowed. Simpson posted a $250 bond and was released. It’s not clear if Simpson was intoxicated when he forgot that he was packing a gun, and left the weapon unattended in a public restroom.
