TWITTER ENCOURAGES USERS TO CHANGE PASSWORDS AFTER BUG “UNMASKED” INTERNAL LOG

Twitter suggest that everyone using the site take a moment to change their passwords after they discovered that a bug had exposed passwords in plain text. Twitter said there investigation showed no signs of an actual breach or misuse of information, but still suggested that anyone using the service consider changing up their password……and consider using a different password other than your Twitter password for anything else you may be using. Twitter hasn’t said how long the bug has been running or how many users may have been affected. The only question that remains is do you even remember your Twitter password?

According to Twitter, the bug occurred because of an issue in the “hashing” process that mask passwords by replacing them with a random string of characters that get stored on Twitter’s systems. The bug allowed passwords to be saved in plain text instead of being masked with the hashing process.
