ATLANTIC CITY’S BORGATA HOTEL & CASINO TO START TAKING SPORTS BETS ON 6/14

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ

New Jersey are you ready? The day has finally arrived when Jersey residents will get to live like Las Vegas residents. Well, at least in the way of legal sports gambling at area casinos.

Action News On 6 ABC (@6abc) reports, the Borgata Hotel & Casino will begin taking sports bets at 11am on Thursday. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is scheduled to place the state’s first sports bet 30 minutes earlier on Thursday morning at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport.

Murphy signed the bill on Monday. Final regulations are expected to come from state regulators sometime on Wednesday.

Many other casinos in New Jersey have yet to announce a date when they will begin taking sports bets, but I’m guessing most or all will be up and running before football season begins. Sports gambling is the money-maker Jersey casinos have been hoping and waiting for ever since neighboring states began opening casinos of their own. There was a time when Jersey was the only place most Philly, New York, and Delaware residents went to gamble. Those days are long gone. Even some New Jersey residents would rather take the short trip across the Ben Franklin Bridge and hit up Philly’s Sugarhouse Casino than drive all the way to AC. Every neighboring state has multiple casinos now. Atlantic City will probably never be the booming gambling hub that it once was in its glory days of the 80’s and 90’s, but casino owners are hoping that sports gambling will give casino revenue a much needed boost. If anything can give the economy a boost, I believe sports gambling can. Revenue from football season should tell the story for most.
