The New York Daily News plans to lay off half of its current newsroom staff. The news comes after the departure of former editor-in-chief, Jim Rich.
Fortune Magazine (@fortune) reports, staff was made aware of the layoffs by an email they received from Tronc, the company that has owned the paper since September of 2017. The email to staffers said the company was “fundamentally restructuring” the New York Daily News. The email also said the paper will now focus on crime, public responsibility, and civil justice.
The New York Daily News is the hometown paper of Donald Trump. The paper has had a long history with the Trumps’ that pre-dates Donald Trump’s campaign run or subsequent presidency. The paper has not relented in their pursuit of the truth about Trump since he became president either. This was the cover of the paper after Trump’s disastorous meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland last week:
The cover was a very clever play on Donald Trump’s infamous bragging claim that he “could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and still not lose any votes.” Some at the paper believe the layoffs were a direct result of the paper’s covering of Donald Trump and his dirty dealings.
“If you hate democracy and think local governments should operate unchecked and in the dark, then today is a good day for you.” Recently departed editor-in chief, Jim Rich said in a tweet.
