48-year old Michael Drejka of Florida was charged with manslaughter on Monday morning. The arrest this morning stems from Drejka shooting and killing 28-year old Markeis McGlockton after an altercation over a parking spot. Drejka had claimed that he shot McGlockton because he feared for his life. A statement that triggered Florida’s controversial “stand your ground” law. Drejka was not charged with a crime at the time.
It wasn’t until video of the murder hit the internet, and the outrage that came afterward, that Florida finally decided to take action and arrest Drejka, charging him with manslaughter.
When I got the news today I was happy about it, but I’m just sorry that it took so long, you know, three weeks later. I know this is going to be a long road. We are up for the task and we just hope for a good outcome at the end.” McGlocton’s father Michael said on Monday.
ABC News (@ABCNews) reported, Drejka was booked at Pinellas County Jail and had bond set at $100,000. A bond Drejka has not yet been able to make at this time. Drejka is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday. If convicted, Drejka is looking at up to 30-years in prison.
